Unlocking Mobile Commerce: An Executive Q&A with Andrew Buck on DTC App Intelligence

Consumer ecommerce brands face a crowded digital marketplace where customer retention determines survival. While mobile apps have emerged as one of the most effective channels for repeat sales and brand loyalty, market data remains heavily siloed. Most brands lack clear visibility into what competitors are building, which features drive engagement, and whether an app investment makes sense for their specific vertical. Without centralized research, ecommerce leaders are forced to make high-stakes product decisions in the dark.

MobiLoud, a leading mobile app platform for Shopify and enterprise retailers since 2013, recently launched DTC Mobile Apps to solve this visibility problem. Tracking hundreds of apps across 19 categories, the new intelligence resource provides feature breakdowns, UX analysis, and competitive insights tailored strictly to consumer brands. In this executive Q&A, Andrew Buck, Head of Content at MobiLoud, discusses the forces reshaping mobile commerce, the data hurdles direct-to-consumer businesses face, and how brands can build high-performing app channels.

Q: Branded mobile apps are increasingly viewed as essential retention engines for retail businesses. What key shifts in consumer shopping behavior prompted MobiLoud to launch the DTC Mobile Apps intelligence platform now?

Andrew Buck: The fact that we consistently find the biggest barrier to entry for ecommerce brands launching their own apps is the unknown.

They know websites, they know merchandising. They know less about what an app is, what it should do, and how to build it.

That’s why we wanted to provide clear information to help bridge the gap and give brands what they need to comfortably step into this new channel.

Q: Mobile app data has historically been siloed across various app stores and proprietary tools. How does DTC Mobile Apps centralize this information, and what unique data points can merchants analyze?

Andrew Buck: At MobiLoud, we’ve been doing mobile apps for over 13 years. We’ve collected a lot of first-party data over that time, which shapes some of our content on the site. At the same time, we have the experience to know what to look for and where to look for it.

That’s what helped us build this resource; the first-hand knowledge of the industry. We’re hoping over time to build out more and more useful data, such as the features and integrations powering each brand’s app, and more indicators of the traction and activity they’re getting through the channel.

Q: Many growing direct-to-consumer brands hesitate to invest in native mobile apps due to concerns about development costs and maintenance. How does MobiLoud’s approach solve these operational challenges compared to traditional custom builds?

Andrew Buck: MobiLoud bypasses the biggest problem with most ways brands build an app: spending time, effort and money rebuilding what already works.

If you think about it, an app doesn’t have to be a completely unique user experience recreated from scratch. App shoppers buy the same way someone on the web does. They find a product, add it to their cart, and check out.

At MobiLoud, we use your existing website as the foundation for your app, which means your starting point is much further along, and there’s no need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars rebuilding what already works.

Q: With more than 600 apps across 19 categories currently cataloged on the platform, what specific design trends and feature sets are separating the highest-converting retail apps from the rest?

Andrew Buck: Simplicity over features. Brands are realizing that an app isn’t about building hundreds of new, flashy and bloated features. It’s about making the customer experience smoother, and often that means less, not more.

Like one brand we worked with – for their app, they stripped away all the parts that new customers need to know, and optimized it to make it as fast as possible for repeat customers to buy. The result was about 2 or 3 taps from seeing a notification to purchasing; by taking away instead of adding anything new.

Q: You mentioned that having a branded app will soon become as standard as having an ecommerce website. What guidance do you offer brands that want to ensure strong adoption and long-term user engagement after launch?

Andrew Buck: First is to understand who it’s for. Your app is for your best customers, not every customer. Optimize the experience with those people in mind, and don’t fuss about trying to get every customer to download the app.

And then on top of that, take it further: see it as a hub for your VIPs. Make your app users feel special. Give them priority access to new products, new promotions. Make the app the place to be for people who love your brand the most, and when they’re in there, let them know they’re valued.

That’s how you build a loyal base of real fans of your brand.

Building a successful mobile app channel requires more than technical execution; it demands clear market intelligence, strategic design, and a sharp focus on customer retention. As mobile commerce continues to dominate digital sales, brands that study proven frameworks and monitor industry benchmarks will avoid expensive missteps and deliver superior shopping experiences.

Dedicated intelligence platforms like DTC Mobile Apps give modern merchants the clarity needed to validate their mobile strategies and benchmark against top performers. Supported by MobiLoud’s technology and expertise, consumer brands can turn mobile apps into sustainable, high-yield revenue drivers.
