Grigor Ter-Ghazaryan on Why Armenia’s Economic Future Depends on New Companies

The GTB Holdings founder has been involved with the Seaside Startup Summit since 2016. His reasoning has less to do with sponsorship than with who builds the next generation of Armenian firms.

YEREVAN, Armenia – Industrial groups rarely spend much time talking about startups. Armenian businessman Grigor Ter-Ghazaryan, founder of GTB Holdings, has made them a recurring part of his work for close to a decade.

His connection to the Seaside Startup Summit goes back to 2016. Over the years the event has hosted founders, mentors, investors and speakers from many countries, giving Armenian and regional startups a stage that would be hard to reach from a small domestic market alone. GTB Holdings, founded in 2022, has supported the summit as part of its broader focus on entrepreneurship and innovation.

Ter-Ghazaryan explains his motive plainly.

“My contribution to this event expresses my willingness to help clear the path for those who are new in the market and need assistance,” he says. “I think that Armenia’s economic future depends not only on established companies but also on the steady emergence of new ones.”

The second sentence carries the argument. In a market the size of Armenia’s, a handful of large employers can only carry growth so far. New firms bring competition, new services and, in time, new jobs. Early on, though, they need things that are hard to find: introductions, mentoring, investor attention and visibility beyond their home city.

That is the gap an event like Seaside tries to close. For a young company, one conversation with the right investor or partner can move its plans forward by months.

There is a personal thread here as well. Ter-Ghazaryan did not start in heavy industry. His early career ran through technology and business development, including work with the Armenian internet provider Xter.net. A founder who came up that way tends to see the value of an ecosystem differently from someone who has only ever run a plant.

Today his group covers steel production in Ararat, construction, real estate development and the Cascade project in Yerevan. The startup work sits alongside all of that, and it predates every one of those business lines.
