For many families across the UAE, the October school break offers a chance to slow down without the cost and planning involved in an overseas holiday. With the mid-term break beginning on October 12 for schools following the Ministry of Education calendar, families have a range of local options, from outdoor markets and attractions to staycations and simple days at the beach.

The break runs from Monday, October 12 to Friday, October 16, with schools resuming on Monday, October 19. When the two weekends are included, families can have a nine-day stretch away from school. Private schools following other curricula may have slightly different dates, so parents should check their individual school calendar.

Choosing to stay close to home

An October break does not necessarily mean booking flights or travelling abroad. Staying in the UAE can make it easier for families to plan around children’s routines while avoiding airport queues, travel time and the extra costs that often come with international trips.

For some households, the appeal is simply having more time together without a tightly packed itinerary. A morning at the beach, an afternoon at an indoor attraction or a relaxed evening out can turn the school break into a holiday without requiring a major journey.

The timing also comes as Dubai’s outdoor season starts to become more active, giving residents more opportunities to spend time outside.

Making the most of the UAE

Dubai and other emirates have plenty of family attractions reopening or starting their seasonal programmes around the October break.

Global Village is scheduled to open its 31st season on October 14, placing its return directly in the middle of the school holiday. The Dubai destination combines international pavilions, food, shopping, entertainment and attractions, giving families an option for an evening outing without leaving the emirate.

Dubai Parks and Resorts also provides a full-day option for families looking for theme-park entertainment. Its attractions include LEGOLAND Dubai, MOTIONGATE Dubai and Real Madrid World, while Riverland offers additional dining and leisure spaces.

For families who prefer a more relaxed plan, Dubai’s parks, beaches and public spaces can provide a simpler alternative to a full-day ticketed attraction.

Staying active during the break

The cooler October period also makes outdoor activities increasingly practical, particularly during the morning and evening.

Families can use the break for walks, cycling, beach visits or trips to outdoor markets rather than spending every day indoors. The Ripe Market at Dubai Police Academy Park, for example, returns for its new outdoor season from October 10, giving families another option as the school holiday begins.

Where: Dubai Police Academy Park
When: From October 10, 2026
Activity: Outdoor market, food, shopping and family activities

Parents do not need to plan an activity for every hour of the holiday. A short morning outing followed by time at home can be enough to give children a change of routine while keeping the day manageable.

A break built around family time

The October holiday is also an opportunity for families to spend time together without the pressure of a traditional holiday itinerary.

Instead of moving between multiple destinations, parents can choose one activity each day and leave room for spontaneous plans. A family meal, movie night, swimming session, or visit to relatives can become part of the holiday alongside larger outings.

This approach can be particularly useful for families with younger children, where long journeys and back-to-back activities can quickly become tiring.

Exploring without overspending

Staying in the UAE does not automatically make a holiday inexpensive, but families can control costs more easily when they are not paying for flights, international accommodation and extended travel.

Free beaches, parks and outdoor walks can be combined with occasional paid experiences. Families can also choose one major attraction during the break rather than booking several expensive activities.

Global Village, for instance, offers a mix of entertainment, shopping, food and attractions in one destination, while local parks and public spaces provide alternatives for days when families want to spend less.

The key is to decide which experiences are worth paying for and build the rest of the holiday around lower-cost activities.

Keeping things simple

For UAE residents, an October break can be less about going somewhere far away and more about making better use of what is already nearby.

With the school holiday coinciding with the return of outdoor events and major seasonal attractions, families have plenty of choices within the UAE. Some may opt for a staycation, while others may spend the week visiting attractions, meeting relatives or simply enjoying quieter days at home.

The result can be a holiday that feels like a proper break without the additional planning involved in international travel.

For families planning the October break, checking school dates, attraction opening schedules and ticket requirements before heading out can help avoid last-minute surprises. With the official mid-term holiday starting on October 12, there is also enough flexibility to mix bigger outings with slower days at home.
